1970–1973 Studium an der Londoner Wimbledon School of Art, 1973–1977 am Royal College of Art, London. 1977 Umzug nach Wuppertal, beginnende Ausstellungstätigkeit. 1979 erste Einzelausstellung in London|1988 Vertreter Großbritanniens auf der Biennale in Venedig. 1988 Turner-Prize. 1988–2001 Professor an der Düsseldorfer Akademie|2001–2006 Professur an der Universität der Künste, Berlin. Seit 1994 Mitglied der Royal Academy in London|seit 2001 Mitglied der Akademie der Künste, Berlin. 2007 Praemium Imperiale. Lebt und arbeitet in Wuppertal.
1970–1973 studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, and then between 1973–1977 at the Royal College of Art|London. 1977 moved to Wuppertal|began exhibiting his work. 1979 first solo exhibition in London|1988 represented the United Kingdom at the Biennale in Venice. 1988 Turner Prize. 1988–2001 Professor at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf|2001–2006 Professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
